It is difficult to post a set price range for paintings because of the many different aspects of them to take into account, but I like to try to give you an idea of what to expect. Before I paint I will give you an estimate of how much the finished product will cost and I will ask for a down payment of 25% of that estimate.
Time is the last factor I take into account when charging for any kind of painting. I find charging by the hour difficult to trust as some people may drag out their painting as long as they can to make more money. I want to keep it fair.
Below you will find descriptions of different projects.
Borders
A border is anything that trims a wall, whether it runs along the top near the ceiling, through the middle, or along the base near the floor.
Try to keep your desired border between 1 and 5 feet wide.
Borders will be priced first by the square foot then by detail. I will start at $3 per square foot, and then I will lower or raise the price depending on how much or how little detail you want your border to have. Time is not a factor here, though I will try to give you an idea of how long it may take for your convenience.
Murals
A mural is any large painting that takes up over half the size of the wall.
Murals will be priced at $5 per square foot, but please note this is a rough estimate as murals can vary greatly in detail. You may want an elaborate landscape or a simple blend of colors in which case it will be a lot more or a lot less than $5 per square foot. Time will also play a part in pricing murals if we're looking at it taking a matter of hours or a matter of days. The ultimate price will be up to my discretion when planning your mural.
Customize your Painting
This is all the odd jobs I'll do that don't really fall under a border or mural category. It could be a growth chart, quotes, small paintings on the wall, small pictures to hang on the wall and/or frames, furniture, etc.
Judging by my past projects, anything that will fit in a 1x1 foot square and isn't too detailed will be around $25. Anything that will fit in about 3x3 feet will start at $75, again depending on the detail. Depending on what you're wanting done, I will judge the price the same way I do either borders or murals.
